In 1987, 26-year-old Cornell student David Malcom perished while working at a Red Cross facility in Ithaca, New York. More than three decades later, investigators claim to have identified the killer in this cold case murder. Police in upstate New York said on Friday that they had identified the murderer with the use of DNA evidence, but that justice would not be served because the murderer passed away in 2019.

The Ithaca Police Department reported that Malcom was fatally stabbed on February 12, 1987, while serving at the Red Cross Emergency Shelter on West Court Street. A male coworker was quickly identified by police as the main suspect. The case, however, became unsolved in 1988 and was continued to be looked into until it was put on hold in 2010, according to a report by the NBC affiliate in Elmira, New York, WETM.

The complex and drawn-out case was finally resolved last week, according to the IPD. The victim's ex-boyfriend, who had sought assistance at the Red Cross Emergency Centre the day before her body was discovered and on which Malcom had worked a 24-hour shift, was the murderer.

After a domestic disturbance in the town of Newfield, the girl sought safety at the shelter, according to the IPD, because she needed assistance getting away from her ex-boyfriend, the Ithaca Times writes. After the girl arrived to the Red Cross, the ex-boyfriend appeared and inquired as to her whereabouts.

Police said that Malcom, who was present at the time, was slain while protecting the girl from harm and refused to provide the ex-boyfriend with any information. Malcom's bravery in withholding the young teen's whereabouts tragically cost him his life, according to police, who released a statement on Friday.

Malcom's relatives and friends were saddened by her killing him and by the mystery surrounding his terrible demise. In comments to The Post-Standard in 1987, a friend of the victim recalled the man she knew, loved, and lost far too soon. "The man was incredibly special because of how nice he was.

Over the past seven years, the investigation has benefited from the assistance of federal, state, county, and local law enforcement authorities, according to the police.
