The girl was found to have at least a dozen broken bones, was covered in burns, scratches, and bruises, and had a laceration in her shin that was so deep that bone could be seen through the incision by medical professionals performing a physical examination at a hospital in the Phoenix region. Medical personnel also saw that the girl's injuries had not received enough medical attention and that several of them were infected. The magnitude of the traumas she endured at home in suburban Glendale would ultimately be revealed to child welfare officials and police enforcement. When they were sleeping at a different relative's house, Wimbish waterboarded the girl with a bucket before dousing her with alcohol and lighting her on fire. The girl also alleged that Wimbish had harassed her sexually. According to the victim, Sergent fractured her nose, burned her leg, and had her take pills through a straw under duress.

The girl reportedly told authorities that Wimbish forced her brother to hammer her in the face. Later, a different kid who lived there would confirm some of the abuse the girl had endured.The small girl's feet and legs were frequently bandaged, according to Wimbish's sister, who was questioned by police. She also said that she had never once seen the pair feed their frequently injured child.

Both the mother and stepfather reportedly denied any involvement in the abuse during police interviews. According to reports, Wimbish claimed he was aware of some of the girl's wounds but never inquired about them. The defendants' accounts significantly evolved over time. Wimbish's ankle monitor was removed in December 2020, the torture started and persisted until she was freed.

The girl was living with two siblings, two adults, and both at the time of the assault. In April 2022, Sergent and Wimbish were ultimately taken into custody.In the news release announcing the defendants' sentencing, Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell said, "The abuse this girl endured at the hands of the adults who were supposed to love and care for her is awful.

"I want to express my gratitude to the young victim who dared to bravely share her experience. Justice was served thanks to the efforts of a concerned relative, a diligent police investigation, and MCAO prosecutors. Both offenders will be placed on supervised probation for a period of ten years following their release from the Arizona Department of Corrections.
