In Illinois, a 58-year-old man will spend the rest of his life in prison for brutally killing an 80-year-old woman by strangling her with an electrical wire, stabbing her with scissors, and hitting her with a blunt object. According to court documents analyzed by Law&Crime, Sangamon County Circuit Judge John Madonia ordered David D. Smith to serve life in a state prison for the 2019 murder of Donna Bricker on Tuesday. The term must be completed in full, thus Smith won't be qualified for parole, per the court docket.

The State Journal-Register reported that on January 6, 2019, authorities responded to a call at a home in the 700 block of West Elliott Street regarding a request for a welfare check. Bricker's family members dialed the dispatch center because they were concerned that she had not arrived for services at Third Presbyterian Church, where she frequently volunteered.

Smith addressed the court and angrily denied being involved in Bricker's death after allegedly apologizing to her family. According to Springfield ABC affiliate WICS, "I absolutely, positively had nothing to do with the death of Donna Bricker."
