At 2:00 a.m. on Saturday, 20-year-old Nicholas Anthony Donofrio's body was discovered on the porch of a house in Columbia. His relatives informed WTNH that he had recently relocated to a neighborhood home that he shared with four of his buddies. In his third year, they joined him to abandon him, he revealed to the Phi Kappa Sigma member. They would not talk about the shooting but called Donofrio "a wonderful son, loving, caring, with all the qualities you could want in a son"

According to the police, they were contacted in response to a report of a forced entry into Donofrio's home in the neighborhood. Donofrio, a resident of South Holly Street, was tragically shot after attempting to enter the wrong building, according to preliminary evidence. According to his LinkedIn page, the young guy was studying kinesiology and exercise science until he transferred from the University of New England in 2021.

Donofrio graduated from Daniel Hand High School in Madison, Connecticut, where he participated in baseball and basketball, according to his parents, who have chosen to remain anonymous. According to his upset parents, Donofrio was a member of the Phi Kappa Sigma fraternity and was looking forward to spending this year living in the fraternity house with his four pals.

Police were initially called to the location in response to a report of theft, but as they are their route, the status has been changed to being shot at. The 20-year-old boy was later discovered dead on the porch by police. It was located two miles from the university's main campus on a street. Police stated that although no one had been arrested, the inquiry was still open.

According to the Stand-In Act, the person who shot Donofrio says they were acting in self-defense. The law permits the use of lethal force in life-threatening situations; a person will not be prosecuted if they die out of fear of having their home robbed. Dina and Louis Donofrio, Nick's devastated parents, described him as "a wonderful son, loving, caring, all the qualities you could want in a son" to News8.

Before going to the University of South Carolina, Donofrio was a solid basketball player during his first year at the University of New England. Under the Stand-In Act, the individual who shot Donofrio claims to have shot him in self-defense. The law permits the use of lethal force when someone is in imminent danger of losing their lives; they will not be held accountable for dying out of fear of having their home plundered.

After Ralph Yarl and Kaylin Gillis were shot in similar circumstances, the attack occurred. Yarl, now 17 years old, was shot in April while en route to a friend's house in Kansas City, Missouri, to pick up his  twin younger brothers after he went to the wrong address. Andrew Lester, a white guy who had twice fired a firearm at him, answered the door when he knocked.

After being charged with first-degree assault and armed criminal behavior, Lester was freed on a $200,000 bail and is now awaiting trial. Also in April, Kevin Monahan's driveway in Hebron, New York, was mistakenly crossed by Gillis and three companions as they were traveling to a remote residence in Washington County. From the porch, 65-year-old Monahan fired two rounds at the automobile, one of which struck Gillis, who was still inside. He faces second-degree murder charges.
