Two Illinois men were sentenced to brief stays in the county jail after a horrifying case of animal abuse. In June 2022, two males attacked a vulnerable raccoon. They recorded the crime, posted the animal snuff video on social media, and even sent some individuals the horrifying clip directly. According to McHenry County Circuit Court documents examined by Law&Crime, 19-year-old Daniel A. Carey was detained in July 2022 on charges of two counts of torturing animals and one count of disorderly conduct. Nathan P. Weber, 19, his accomplice, was detained on charges of disruptive conduct, depicting animal cruelty, and torturing animals.

The incident took place in Huntley, a sizable suburban community that lies on the border of the counties of McHenry and Kane and is a component of the larger Chicago metropolitan area. According to a criminal complaint that the Lake & McHenry County Scanner was able to get, Carey impaled the unfortunate animal after torturing it by stabbing it with a sword in the video. The two males alternately beat the raccoon until it was impaled by what the police described as "a cutlass-style sword or large knife," before they were both fatally stabbed.

According to the lawsuit, Weber allegedly pins the animal with a garden rake in the video, causing it to suffer for an extended period of time. Carey then causes the highly intelligent social mammal, whose names stem from its well-known hand gestures, "extreme physical pain" by Carey allegedly repeatedly hit the raccoon in the head with a hammer, forcing it to "suffer in agony," according to the lawsuit.

Weber was given a sentence in April that included two years of probation, 240 hours of community service, and 10 days in county jail. Carey was given a sentence on August 31 that included 18 months of probation and 60 days in county jail. Additionally, he has to finish 240 hours of volunteer work.
