Before being released from prison for sexually abusing one of his young students, a 63-year-old world-class equestrian coach and former Olympian show jumper in Oregon will have to serve a sentence longer than an Olympic Games. Rich Fellers was sentenced to 50 months in a federal detention facility on Thursday by U.S. District Judge Karin Immergut for the torture he inflicted on Maggie Kehring beginning when she was 16 years old, according to reports.

In a plea agreement in July, Feller agreed to admit guilt to one count of travelling over state lines to engage in illegal sexual activity with a child. Fellers must register on the federal and state sex offender lists and serve an extra five years of supervised release in addition to his time in prison. In addition, the Washington County District Attorney's Office had accused him of abusing Kehring on four counts of second-degree sex abuse.

According to the prosecution, the couple's connection started when Kehring was 16 years old and concluded with a road trip in June 2020 when they left Oregon and went to a horse show in Michigan. Judge Immergut said to Fellers, "You basically stole the innocence of a child," before imposing the penalty, according to a story from The Chronicle of the Horse.
